Different Types of Fire Extinguishers
It’s important to know what specific fire extinguishers you require for your space. There are different classes that all serve different purposes – they contain different agents that extinguish different types of fires.
Class A – Used for combustible material fires on items such as paper, wood, cloth and other textiles
Class B – Used for burning liquids such as petrol, kerosene and diesel fuel
Class C – Used to extinguish flammable gases such as propane, butane, Calor gas and methane
Class D – Used to eradicate fires for combustible materials such as magnesium and potassium
Class F – Used to put out fires that have been caused by cooking oils
The most common types of extinguishers are:
- Water – Used in Class A
- Water Mist – Used in Class A, B, C and F
- Carbon Dioxide – Used in Class B and Electrical
- ABC Powder – Used in Class A, B and C
- Foam Spray – Used in Class A and B
Using Fire Extinguishers
There are three ways that fire extinguishers can function. As different extinguishers have a range of contents, they all work differently to maximise their effectiveness on what forms of fire they face.
- The most common form of extinguisher is those that contain water. The water removes the heat from the fire.
- Dry powder works differently. It smothers the fire with a layer of powder or foam. This, in turn, eliminates oxygen from being able to fuel the fire.
- Carbon dioxide also smothers the fire. As this happens, the carbon dioxide starts to cool. This leads to the heat being removed from the fire.
